Artist’s advice regarding maintenance of steel artwork, free-standing or wall-mounted
All untreated steel will rust as a result of exposure to damp air. A brownish- red substance forms on the surface of the steel as a result of oxidation and eventually, rusting leads to corrosion and weakening of the metal. Rusting is a slow process, like aging. If it is too slow and uneven, white vinegar mixed with water (1 to 3 ratio) will help alleviate this.
Controlling circumstances, such as keeping the steel sculpture in a dry, interior environment, and wiping it every few months with a cloth, dampened with a furniture oil. ( I use Gaudreaults Antique Tung Oil), Also a soft furniture wax applied and then polish the surface will also provide protection for a few months. Some other surface treatments include a clear shellac which needs care in its application. Note that some protective coatings like a liquid or a paste wax will impact the lustre and colour of the steel. Some metal polishes are also not as effective on heat treated and forged steel as they are on other metals.
